Perhaps you are planning a surprise marriage proposal and typed, "Best Long Island Proposal Photographer" into the search bar.
What skills and equipment must a photographer possess to be considered a top proposal photographer?
There are several qualities:
1) Being able to discreetly capture the reactions, expressions and emotions not only when the question is popped, but pre and post the moment a "yes" is said.
2) Must use a telephoto lens. I use my Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VRII. This outstanding lens is tack sharp and allows me to remain a respectful distance away so I can be hidden and secretive.
3) Know the location and instruct the proposer of the best place to kneel that will produce the best lighting so that both of them are evenly lit.
4) Having a plan B in case it rains or the location suddenly becomes unavailable.
5) Providing guidance and tips to the proposer before the session to yield the best photographs possible. One tip, for example; ask the proposer to remove sunglasses off their partner's face before asked. If the subject is wearing sunglasses; it will conceal expression and reaction.
6)Speak to your photographer before the session. They will be photographing a once in a lifetime moment for you. You should not only connect with their work but connect with them. This will put you at ease which is important as you may feel nervous popping the question.

This groom to be called me from his home in Ohio!
He wanted to propose in Montauk because he and his bride to be used to live in New York City and had their first date in Montauk.
Since that date, they fell in love with Montauk and created many memories there.
He originally requested proposing at Hither Hills State Park, however; I suggested Camp Hero.
The bluffs at Camp Hero State Park would elevate us with the iconic Montauk Lighthouse in the background along with picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean. Providing context that the proposal took place in Montauk. If I had taken the photos at Hither Hills it might have just looked like Jones beach or Robert Moses Field 5. He loved that input and was on board.
Because I was familiar with Camp Hero I was able to explain it's benefits and features.
What time of day and where he should kneel.
The proposal and post engagement photos were a success as a result.
